Alan Spence became the minister at Abington Avenue in August 2008.
Alan taught Mathematics in an African school in Harare before serving in the South African townships as an evangelist. Then for five years he organised and spoke at camps, conferences and house-parties across Zimbabwe as a Scripture Union Travelling Secretary.
Alan prepared for ordained Christian ministry by completing his BD at King’s College London and was appointed senior minister at Highlands Presbyterian Church in Harare.
Interested in theological training, he helped to found Domboshawa College, a theological institution in Harare associated with the university there and for his own preparation completed a PhD in London under Colin Gunton. Alan has been a City Councillor in Harare, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa and chair of the Consultation of Christian Churches in Cape Town. His interest in human rights led him to chair the Justice, Peace and Reconciliation Committee of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches.
In recent years he moved back to the UK with his wife Sheila and two sons. During the last three years he has seen the publication of 'The Promise of Peace: A Unified Theory of Atonement'; 'Incarnation and Inspiration: John Owen and The Coherence of Christology' and 'Christology: a guide for the perplexed'.
